Week 2 - 24th April

Another week has flown by but it’s been a good week for Year 6.


This week in English, we have been writing our narratives based on the video ‘Flight’, which we watched at the end of last week. The video briefly details the life of a boy who can fly. We chose to write our narratives about the first time the boy flew. Last week, the children came up with some wonderful ideas for how and when their stories could take place and now it was time to turn these ideas into an engaging story. Before we wrote our stories, we discussed different ways we could engage a reader and thought about how some of the books we read engage us. Full of ideas, our pens hit the paper and we began to create some fantastic stories. By the end of the week, the children had written some interesting and engaging stories that they can be proud of. Next week, we will focus on developing our techniques for comprehension ahead of SATs week.


In Maths this week, we continued to prepare for our upcoming SATs week through discussing and practising SATs style questions. The children have embraced the challenge and every week are trying to improve their understanding and approaches to questions. I have been particularly proud of their achievements in our recent arithmetic practice paper. Next week, we will focus on reasoning style questions and developing our understanding of them.


On Monday afternoon, we started our new Science topic, Electricity. We discussed the statement ‘Electricity is crucial to life’ and how our lives would be affected without electricity. Having discussed electricity, we looked at a concept cartoon in which three children discussed the effect of putting a knot in a wire and using it in a circuit. As a class we couldn’t agree which child was right so we set about create circuits and testing the effect of a knot in the wire. Having seen that it had no real effect, we investigated what we could do to affect the flow of electricity.
