Week 7 Spellings

Apostrophes for belonging (singular).

If we want to show that something belongs to something else, we can use an apostrophe.

  1. Lucy’s bag (the bag belongs to Lucy)

  2. Miss Frith’s pen (the pen belongs to Miss Frith)

  3. Today’s weather

  4. The child’s coat

As you can see, the above examples are all ONE person or thing. Next week, we will look at what happens when you write about more than one.

You do not need to use an apostrophe for a possessive pronoun (yours, his, hers, its, ours, theirs) because they already show belonging.

Can you think of any?

There are some activities on the website for you to have a go at!
