This week in Maths we have finished our unit on decimals, calculating with decimals and money. I would really like to encourage the children to practise their number bonds at home to consolidate the work that we are doing in school. I have set tasks on Purple Mash to help the children do this independently and they can teach you how to play Ping Pong.
In English this week, we have started looking at persuasive texts and the children have really enjoyed trying to persuade each other to swap siblings for trips to the moon, persuade a character in a story to step or not step on an ant and persuade pirates NOT to go searching for treasure. Marking their work tonight, I can see that they have shown great understanding of the skills needed and look forward to seeing them apply the skills on a more serious topic next week.
The afternoons this week were focused on preparing for our class assembly and I was very proud of how they presented their amazing writing to you this morning. Even though some of them were nervous, I thought they shared their work brilliantly and I loved hearing them read their work for you today.
As a school we have just signed up for a trial of an exciting Times Table practice website, TT Rock Stars. As you may know, from next year, there will be compulsory testing of all times tables in Year 4 nationally. We spend some time most days practising them in class, but the more work the children can do at home the better. There is opportunity for the children to compete against each other and against me too! They have all been sent home with their logins and I hope that they make the most of this opportunity. I am also happy for children to play on the school computers during part of their lunch hour too. The trial is just for a month and after that we will review how successful it was and whether we invest in it. Please encourage your children to engage with this fabulous tool. You can find all the details in Times Tables Rock Stars.
